Hardscape That Performs in
Massachusetts Weather

A patio is not just pavers on dirt. A retaining wall is not just stacked blocks. The visible surface is maybe 20% of what makes a hardscape project last. The other 80% is underground: base depth, compaction, drainage grading, geotextile fabric, edge restraint. Get those wrong and the surface starts shifting, settling, and cracking within a few seasons. Get them right and the same patio looks and functions the same way twenty years later.

J. Gudiel Landscape has been building hardscapes across Massachusetts since 2000. In that time we have also repaired a lot of work done by other contractors, patios with 3 inches of base that should have had 8, retaining walls with no drainage behind them, walkways with no edge restraint that spread apart after one winter. Those repairs taught us as much as our own installations did.

Every hardscape project we build follows a specific standard: 6 to 8 inches of compacted crushed gravel base (not the 4 inches that cuts costs but fails in this climate), geotextile fabric where soil conditions require it, proper compaction in lifts, polymeric sand joints that actually bind, and edge restraint on every exposed border. We hold Unilock Authorized Contractor certification, which means these are not just our preferences. They are the installation standards we are certified to deliver.

Paver Patios

The most common hardscape project and the one where base preparation matters the most. We build patios using pavers from Unilock, Techo-Bloc, Cambridge, and Nicolock in a range of styles, colors, and patterns. Every patio includes a full compacted gravel base, screeded bedding sand, proper drainage pitch (minimum 1% slope away from structures), polymeric sand in all joints, and edge restraint along every border. Patio sizes range from small backyard sitting areas to large multi-zone entertainment spaces with integrated fire pits, kitchens, and seating walls.

Retaining Walls

Retaining walls serve a structural purpose first and an aesthetic purpose second. They hold soil, manage grade changes, prevent erosion, and direct water flow. We build segmental block walls (Unilock, Techo-Bloc), natural stone walls, and boulder walls depending on the application and the look the client wants. Every wall over 4 feet in Massachusetts requires engineering, and we coordinate that process. All walls include proper drainage behind them (crushed stone backfill and perforated pipe) because a retaining wall without drainage is a wall that will eventually fail.

Walkways and Pathways

Paver or natural stone walkways connecting the house to the patio, the driveway to the front door, or different zones of the landscape. We build on the same base standard as our patios (this is not a place to cut corners). Walkways get heavy foot traffic and exposure to de-icing salt in winter, so the base, joint sand, and material selection all need to account for that.

Driveways

Paver driveways and cobblestone driveways are a significant investment, and they need to handle vehicle weight, turning stress, and constant freeze-thaw exposure. We build driveway bases with thicker compaction profiles than patios (8+ inches minimum) and use pavers rated for vehicular traffic. Materials include Unilock, Techo-Bloc, and Cambridge products specifically designed for driveway applications.

Steps and Staircases

Granite steps, paver steps, and natural stone staircases that connect different elevations on your property. Every set of stairs we build meets local code for riser height, tread depth, and landing requirements. We set steps on compacted gravel bases with proper drainage underneath to prevent frost heave, which is the primary cause of step shifting in Massachusetts.

Outdoor Kitchens and Fire Pits

Built-in grills, cooking stations, fire pits, and fireplaces constructed as part of your patio or outdoor living space. These features are built with the same base standards as the surrounding hardscape and use fire-rated materials where heat exposure requires it. Gas line and electrical connections are coordinated with licensed trades. If you are looking for a full outdoor living design (pergola, kitchen, fire feature, seating, lighting), see our Outdoor Living page for the complete scope.

Masonry and Stone Work

Custom stone veneer, natural stone walls, stone columns, mailbox surrounds, and decorative masonry. We work with both natural stone (fieldstone, bluestone, granite) and manufactured stone veneer products. Masonry work adds character and permanence to a property, and the craftsmanship in the joints, cuts, and mortar work is what separates a professional result from a DIY attempt.

Seat Walls and Garden Walls

Low decorative walls (typically 18 to 24 inches) built around patios, fire pits, or garden beds. These serve as both visual borders and additional seating for entertaining. We build them with matching materials to the surrounding patio or walkway for a cohesive look.

Why J. Gudiel Landscape Uses Unilock Products

We work with several premium paver manufacturers (Techo-Bloc, Cambridge, Nicolock), but Unilock is our primary partner and the brand we recommend most often for residential hardscape projects in Massachusetts.

Unilock pavers are manufactured with a process that produces a denser, more durable surface than standard concrete pavers. The color holds longer, the surface stays slip-resistant, and the structural integrity does not degrade the way lower-cost products do after repeated freeze-thaw exposure.

As a Unilock Authorized Contractor, J. Gudiel Landscape has completed training in Unilock’s installation methods and meets their standards for base preparation, joint stabilization, and edge restraint. This certification allows us to offer qualifying projects the Unilock Peace of Mind Workmanship Guarantee, which covers both the product and the installation.

Not every project requires Unilock. We recommend the right product for the right application. But when a homeowner asks what we would put on our own patio, the answer is usually Unilock.

What Our Hardscape Clients Say About J. Gudiel Landscape

“This started as a multi-phased project which was supposed to take multiple seasons. Jose was very flexible and we moved phases around and just kept moving. By the time everything was done, Jose had completed the whole thing in only one season. It looks amazing. Every person who comes over comments on the yard.”

“We had an old patio that was in very poor and dangerous shape. They listened to what we wanted, worked within our budget, and the results are perfect. We were very impressed with the hard work, dedication, and care they put into this project.”

Unilock Authorized Contractor

J. Gudiel Landscape is one of a limited number of Unilock Authorized Contractors in Massachusetts. Our team has completed specialized training in paver installation techniques and meets Unilock’s standards for base preparation, drainage, joint stabilization, and edge restraint.

For homeowners, this means three things: access to Unilock’s full premium product line (including options not available through standard installers), installation that follows manufacturer specifications (which is what makes your patio survive 25 Massachusetts winters, not just 5), and eligibility for Unilock’s extended warranty program.
