Every Outdoor Project Starts
With the Ground

Before a pool can be set, the site has to be excavated to the right depth and grade. Before a patio can be built, the existing material has to be removed and the subgrade has to be prepared. Before a new home’s yard can be landscaped, the rough grade from construction has to be corrected so water moves away from the foundation instead of toward it.

Excavation is the foundation underneath every outdoor project we build. It is also a standalone service we offer to homeowners, builders, and contractors who need site work done correctly and on schedule.

J. Gudiel Landscape owns excavation equipment and manages all site work in-house. That means your project timeline does not depend on a third-party excavation company’s availability. When we schedule excavation, it happens. There is no waiting two weeks because the excavation subcontractor took another job.

We have been doing site work across Massachusetts since 2000. Pool digs, foundation prep, driveway grading, lot clearing, drainage installation, and utility trenching. The equipment and experience are here. The schedule is ours to control.

Pool

Pool Excavation

Precise excavation for inground pool installations. Pool digs require accuracy in depth, grade, and dimensions because the pool shell must sit dead-level in the hole. We excavate to the specifications of the pool manufacturer or engineer, manage soil removal or on-site redistribution, and prepare the hole for shell placement, plumbing, and backfill. If you are planning a full pool installation, see our Pool Installation page for the complete project scope.

Site Preparation for Construction

Clearing and grading for new construction, additions, and major renovation projects. We work with builders, general contractors, and homeowners who need a site prepared before construction begins. This includes tree and stump removal, brush clearing, topsoil stripping and stockpiling, rough grading to engineered specifications, and access road preparation for construction vehicles.

Grading and Regrading

Correcting the grade of a property so water drains properly. This is one of the most common excavation services we provide. Poor grading causes wet basements, standing water, erosion, and damage to foundations and hardscape. We regrade to create positive drainage away from structures and toward appropriate discharge points (swales, catch basins, storm drains, or dry wells). Grading is often done as part of a larger landscaping or hardscape project, but we also take it on as a standalone service.

Land Clearing

Removing trees, stumps, brush, rocks, and debris from a lot to prepare it for construction, landscaping, or other development. We handle clearing for residential lots, commercial sites, and undeveloped parcels. Material is removed from the site or processed on-site (chipped brush, stockpiled topsoil) depending on the project requirements and local disposal regulations.

Drainage Installation

French drains, curtain drains, catch basins, dry wells, and pipe-to-daylight systems. Drainage problems do not fix themselves, and surface solutions (regrading alone) do not always solve subsurface water issues. We dig, install, and backfill drainage systems designed to intercept and redirect groundwater and surface water away from structures, hardscapes, and usable areas of the property. Drainage work is often combined with grading as part of a comprehensive water management solution.

Driveway Excavation and Preparation

Removing existing driveway material (asphalt, concrete, gravel) and preparing the subgrade for a new driveway surface. Whether the new driveway will be paver, asphalt, or gravel, the subgrade needs to be excavated to the proper depth, graded for drainage, and compacted to support vehicle traffic. We handle the full removal and preparation so the surfacing crew (or our own paver installation team) is working on a properly engineered base.

Utility Trenching

Trenching for underground utilities including water lines, sewer connections, electrical conduit, gas lines, and irrigation piping. We dig to the required depth and width, maintain proper clearances from existing utilities, and backfill according to local code and utility company requirements. Utility locating (DigSafe) is coordinated before any trenching begins.

Why J. Gudiel Landscape Manages Excavation In-House

Many landscaping and hardscape companies subcontract their excavation work. That means your project depends on the availability of a separate company with its own schedule, its own priorities, and its own crew. If the excavation subcontractor is busy, your project waits. If they do not show up on the scheduled day, your timeline slips. If the quality of the dig is not right, the landscaping crew has to fix it before they can start their work.

J. Gudiel Landscape owns excavators, skid steers, and compact equipment. Our operators are on our crew. When excavation is scheduled on a Monday, it happens on Monday. The same team that digs the site is the same team that builds the hardscape or installs the pool on top of it. There is no gap between the excavation crew leaving and the construction crew arriving. No finger-pointing about whose grading was off. One team, one standard, one schedule.

For homeowners, builders, and contractors who just need excavation as a standalone service (no pool, no patio, no landscaping), we do that too. Same equipment, same operators, same reliability.

Snow and Ice Management Questions

How much does excavation cost?
Excavation costs vary widely based on the scope of work. A simple regrading project might run $2,000 to $5,000. A pool dig with soil removal typically runs $5,000 to $15,000. A full lot clearing with grading can range from $10,000 to $30,000+. Access difficulty, soil conditions (ledge rock, high water table), and disposal fees all affect cost. We provide a specific quote after assessing the site.
Yes. We coordinate DigSafe markouts before any excavation project. Massachusetts law requires utility locating before digging, and we handle the entire process including scheduling, verifying markings, and maintaining proper clearances during excavation.

Yes. While much of our excavation work is part of larger projects (pool installations, hardscape construction, landscaping), we also provide standalone excavation for homeowners, builders, and contractors who just need site prep, grading, clearing, or drainage work done.

We own and operate excavators (mini and mid-size), skid steers with various attachments (buckets, rakes, augers), compact track loaders, plate compactors, and dump trucks. Equipment is selected based on the specific job: tight residential access requires compact machines, while larger commercial sites use full-size equipment.
Most residential excavation projects (pool digs, regrading, drainage) take 1 to 3 days. Larger projects (lot clearing, commercial site prep) can take 1 to 2 weeks depending on acreage, soil conditions, and the amount of material being removed. We provide a timeline with every quote.
Yes. We regularly provide excavation services for builders, general contractors, and other landscaping companies who need reliable site work. We coordinate scheduling, site access, and grade specifications with the project team. If excavation is part of a J. Gudiel pool or hardscape project, we manage the full coordination internally.
