Composite Deck Building by J. Gudiel Landscape

Custom decks built with Trex, TimberTech, and Deckorators for Massachusetts homeowners. No annual staining. No rot. No splinters. Just a deck that looks the same in year ten as it did the day we finished it.

Why Massachusetts Homeowners Are Choosing Composite Over Wood

Wood decks in Massachusetts have a short life. The combination of summer humidity, winter ice, spring rain, and constant UV exposure breaks wood down faster than most homeowners expect. Within 3 to 5 years, a pressure-treated deck starts showing cracks, splinters, warping, and discoloration.Maintaining it means staining or sealing every 1 to 2 years, replacing rotted boards, and dealing with mold and mildew on the underside.

Composite decking eliminates nearly all of that. The material does not rot, does not splinter, does not warp, and does not need staining or sealing. It holds its color, stays cool underfoot compared to older composite products, and resists mold, mildew, and insect damage. The upfront cost is higher than pressure-treated wood, but over 10 to 15 years the total cost of ownership is lower because maintenance is essentially zero.

J. Gudiel Landscape builds custom composite decks using Trex, TimberTech, and Deckorators. These are not generic composite boards from a big-box store. They are commercial-grade products with manufacturer warranties ranging from 25 years to lifetime coverage depending on the product line. We handle everything from design and permitting through framing, decking installation, railings, lighting, and finishing.

Trex

The most recognized name in composite decking. Trex offers multiple product lines at different price points, from the entry-level Enhance series to the premium Transcend Lineage collection. All Trex products are made from 95% recycled materials, resist fading and staining, and come with a 25-year limited residential warranty. Trex boards feature a protective shell on all four sides that guards against moisture penetration, which matters in a climate where decks sit under snow for months.

TimberTech

TimberTech produces both composite and PVC decking. Their Advanced PVC line (Vintage, Landmark, Harvest) offers the best moisture resistance available, making it a strong choice for pool decks and ground-level installations where water exposure is constant. TimberTech products come with a 30-year structural warranty and a 30-year fade and stain warranty on most lines. The color selection is wide and the board profiles include realistic wood grain textures.

Deckorators

Deckorators offers mineral-based composite decking (Vault and Voyage lines) that combines durability with a price point that sits between entry-level and premium. The mineral-based core resists moisture absorption better than standard wood-plastic composites, which reduces expansion and contraction through temperature swings. A solid option for homeowners who want composite performance without the price of the top-tier Trex or TimberTech lines.

Backyard Decks

The most common project. A raised or ground-level deck extending from the back of the house into the yard, designed for entertaining, dining, or relaxing. We design the layout around how you plan to use the space, traffic flow between the house and the yard, sun and shade patterns, and sight lines from inside the home. Standard sizes range from 200 to 600 square feet, but we build to whatever the space and the client require.

Multi-Level Decks

Properties with grade changes or homeowners who want distinct zones (dining area on one level, lounge area on another, stairs connecting to the yard) benefit from multi-level designs. These require more complex framing and structural planning, but the result is a deck that follows the natural contour of the property rather than fighting it. Each level can use a different board direction or color accent to visually separate the zones.

Pool Decks

Composite decking around a pool is an alternative to traditional paver decks. TimberTech’s PVC products are particularly well-suited for pool surrounds because they absorb almost no moisture and stay cooler underfoot than darker composite boards. We coordinate composite pool decks with the pool installation and surrounding hardscape so everything connects. If you are building a new pool, see our Pool Installation page for the full scope of what we handle.

Deck and Patio Combinations

Many of our projects combine a composite deck off the house with a paver patio at ground level, connected by composite or stone steps. This gives you two distinct outdoor zones (a raised deck for grilling and dining, a ground-level patio with a fire pit or seating area) that function as one continuous outdoor space. We build both the deck and the patio under the same project, coordinating materials, elevations, and drainage between them.

Built-In Features

Composite decks can include built-in benches, planter boxes, privacy screens, pergola connections, and storage compartments. These features are framed during construction and clad with the same composite material as the deck surface for a clean, unified look. Built-in seating is especially popular on smaller decks where standalone furniture would take up too much floor space.

Deck Lighting

Low-voltage LED lighting integrated into stair risers, post caps, railing profiles, and deck surface. Lighting extends the usability of the deck into the evening and adds safety on stairs and transitions. We install lighting during construction so all wiring is concealed within the framing. No visible wires, no surface-mounted fixtures.

How J. Gudiel Landscape Builds Composite Decks

The decking material gets all the attention, but the structure underneath is what determines whether the deck is still solid and level ten years from now. Every J. Gudiel deck is built with:

Proper framing

Pressure-treated lumber sized and spaced to manufacturer specifications for the decking product being installed. Joist spacing, beam sizing, and post footings are engineered for the specific deck dimensions, load requirements, and local code. We do not use undersized framing to cut costs.

Code-compliant footings

Deck posts sit on concrete footings set below the frost line (48 inches in Massachusetts). This prevents frost heave from lifting and shifting the deck structure. We pull permits and schedule inspections to confirm compliance.

Concealed fastening systems

Most composite decking is installed with hidden fastener systems (clips between boards rather than face screws). This gives a clean surface with no visible screw heads and allows the boards to expand and contract naturally with temperature changes.

Proper ventilation

Adequate airflow underneath the deck prevents moisture buildup on the underside of the boards and within the framing. We maintain proper clearances between the deck surface and the ground, especially on ground-level builds where ventilation is more restricted.

Flashing and ledger boards

Where the deck attaches to the house, we install proper ledger board flashing to prevent water intrusion into the home's structure. This is one of the most common points of failure on decks built by inexperienced contractors, and it can cause serious damage to the home if done incorrectly.

Composite Deck Questions

How much does a composite deck cost?
Most composite deck projects fall between $15,000 and $50,000+ depending on size, product line, features (railings, lighting, built-ins), and site conditions. A standard 300 square foot deck with mid-range composite and simple railings sits on the lower end. A 600+ square foot multi-level deck with premium Trex or TimberTech, integrated lighting, built-in seating, and pergola connection sits on the higher end. We provide a detailed written proposal after visiting your property.
Most residential composite deck projects take 1 to 2 weeks from start to completion. Multi-level decks, larger builds, or projects that include demolition of an existing deck may take 2 to 3 weeks. Permitting can add time depending on your town’s review process, and we factor that into the timeline.
Over the life of the deck, composite typically costs less than wood when you factor in maintenance. A pressure-treated wood deck needs staining or sealing every 1 to 2 years ($500 to $1,500 per application), periodic board replacements, and eventually a full rebuild after 15 to 20 years. A composite deck needs occasional cleaning with soap and water and nothing else. The materials carry 25 to 30+ year warranties. Most homeowners find the math favors composite within 5 to 7 years of ownership.
It depends on the project and the budget. Trex Transcend is our most popular product for standard backyard decks. TimberTech’s PVC line is our recommendation for pool decks and high-moisture applications. Deckorators is a strong choice when the budget is tighter but the homeowner still wants composite performance over wood. We bring samples to the consultation so you can see and feel the actual products.
Yes. We regularly build composite decks and surrounds around existing pools. TimberTech PVC products work particularly well in pool environments because they resist moisture absorption and stay cooler underfoot. If the pool is being installed at the same time, we coordinate both projects together.
Older composite products had a reputation for getting hot. Current-generation boards from Trex, TimberTech, and Deckorators have improved significantly. Lighter colors stay noticeably cooler than darker ones. TimberTech PVC stays the coolest of the three brands. If heat is a concern (especially for pool decks where bare feet are common), we recommend lighter color options and can discuss which products perform best in direct sun.
Yes. Most Massachusetts towns require a building permit for new deck construction. The permit process includes structural plans, footing inspection, framing inspection, and final inspection. We handle the entire permitting process, submit all required plans, and schedule every inspection.
